Magazines and Self-Image |
If you ask me self-image is one of the biggest issues ever. Self-image is how a person sees themselves. A negative self-image is actually a thinking disorder. A person’s self-image affects everything they do and their happiness. A person’s self-image can be positively or negatively influenced by watching T. V. and reading magazines. |
A kid’s perspective on their race is something that affects their self-image because of T.V. On T.V white boys have a good life so their self-confidence is boosted. They are often put into positions with lots of power and money. They have a good education, a beautiful wife, and a big glamorous house. White girls and black girls and boys definitely don’t get the confidence boost white males do. Black actors are often put in the role of being a criminal and not getting a good education. So then black children at home might get the wrong idea and give up on trying to get good grades. For white girls it’s hard to find a verity of different roles. Most of the time white women are the mother and only the mother of a family. Or they have lots of power that they abuse or are very nasty with.
Parents might be great at ignoring the T.V but most of the time they don’t realize that what their kids see on T.V today shapes their view of normal.
The impact on children and teenagers is huge. 69% of girls in 5th – 12th reported that magazine pictures influenced their image for the perfect body. Did you know that 40% of all 9 and 10 year old girls have already been on a diet. Among high school students, 44% of girls and 15% of guys are trying to lose weight. More than 70% of girls, ages 15 to 17 avoid normal activities, when they feel bad about themselves. 80% of women who answered a people magazine survey responded that images of women on T.V and in movies make them feel insecure. 70% of 6 to 12 year old girls already want to be thinner. In a Rader program study 3 out of 4 women stated that they were overweight when only 1 out of the 4 women were actually over weight. A U.S. woman on average is 5’4” tall weighing 140 lbs. Although the average U.S. model is 5’11” weighing 117 lbs. Another Rader program study found that adolescent girls were actually more afraid of gaining weight than getting cancer, nuclear war and losing their parents.
A person’s self-image can be affected by a relationship but it can also affect their relationship. People with a negative self-image may stop being friends with the people that are still friends with them. For example, if I had a negative self-image I might stop being friends with my best friend because they are trying to make me feel better but it’s just making me feel worse, which sometimes happens to people. People sometimes give their insecurities, struggles, and obstacles too much power over them. Those with low self-esteem have been found to stay in relationships that lowers their self-esteem even more. What’s even worse is that you don’t confront the things in your relationship that are troubling you. Something that might help you with some problems in your relationship is to actually stop and think everyone has their own struggles, insecurities and obstacles. Even the person you think is the most confident person in the world. “Confidence carries”. This means that if you project yourself with confidence, other people will be more confident in you. So then if you show empathy to yourself and to your family, friends, and your partner you might actually avoid a lot of fights. Plus you might be happier too.
You might not believe this, but most of the time other people think you are more beautiful than you think you are. Then again this fact might not help you because you can never know what other people are thinking. One thing that I know is every single person is beautiful and unique in their own ways. Lots of people need to be more grateful of their natural beauty. At around 1990 fashion designers and Hollywood directors had the power to define a look (ugly or beautiful). Now think, how is that going to affect your relationship with movies and the clothes you buy? You might stop watching movies that are made by those directors. You might not. Personally I think that’s a little wrong because it’s not just the director getting paid when you buy or watch those movies, it’s also the cast, the editors, the prop makers and many more people. You might also stop watching fashion shows with those designers, you might stop buying their clothes or you might not do anything because you know the truth, this is normal.
What you think about yourself affects wat your friends and family and everyone else thinks about you. There are lots of signs that your relationship is bad for your self-esteem. Some of them are definitely more helpful than others. Some of them are worthy enough to be in a research paper I found five of these. Number 1 is your losing your sense of self. Have you stopped doing any of your favorite things because of any of your relationships? In a relationship that isn’t really helping your self-esteem your friend partner or family member is extremely controlling. Are you being “thrown around” in your relationship? When someone tells you anything like “this conversation is over you can’t talk to me like that” that might be a sign that you are losing some important relationship boundaries. The third is you find yourself testing the relationship. If you’ve started to doubt the relationship itself you might be losing some self-esteem. Another sign is that your needs have stopped mattering. You and your friend, partner or family member are always going to their favorite restaurants, hanging out with their friends and every time you say let’s go do this you get shot down. Finally, you assume all fights are your fault. Some fights in a relationship are just healthy. What’s not is thinking it’s always your fault and pointing fingers at yourself. My advice for this is just don’t sweat the little things.
One of the best ways to improve your self-image is to just accept your flaws and reminding yourself that you’re only human you’re not perfect and no one else is either. Negative or positive all the thoughts that go through your head make you who you are. If you have positive thoughts you’re most likely going to be a pretty positive person and have a pretty positive life. If you think both positively and negatively you should have a pretty good life. Mostly because everyone has positive moments in their life and negative moments. Most people only see the negative in themselves, and forget about all the great things. The body you are born with is the body you will always have.
Dr. Ann Kearney-Kooke says that “people should try to understand why they have certain feelings about their body.” She says “if you understand where the feelings come from you can move toward changing them and learning to your body.” If you have empathy for yourself, put yourself in your own shoes you can start to understand your self-image. Then you can begin the life long journey of changing it. A positive self-image isn’t going to apper on your front door steps you have to work for it.
What do you think when I say all magazines have only a negative effect on women? Now what do you think when I tell you this isn’t true? Well it’s actually not true. When women see thin models they like it actually makes them feel better about themselves than when they see a thin model they don’t like. When women are trying to sell something in a magazine article or a tv advertisement it makes women feel bad about themselves. When a model or celebrity isn’t wearing a gallon of makeup and in really nice clothes we use or self-images as a defense mechinisum as to say “ I get what you’re doing and I’m not falling for it.” Then we feel better about ourselves. A lot of people will turn to smoking to lose weight. Another reason to stop smoking. This is just all bad because you shouldn’t feel the need to lose weight in the first place and what you think is making you more beautiful now is killing you in the future.
Watching tv and reading magazines greatly affects a person’s self-image. Beth Moore said “We will have to let the truth scream louder to our souls than the lies that have infected us.” This is a great quote, what it means to me, is that all the lies people have been telling about you are just going to have to be pushed aside and the truth is the only thing that matters. Thank you Beth Moore for coming up with this. A person’s race will affect their chances of them having an acting carer. A lot of kids and teenagers have a pretty negative self-image that people can help with. Relationships can be affected by a person’s self-image or a person’s self-image can be affected by a relationship. Self empathy is one of the biggest keys to a positive self-image. Everyone is affected by their self-image so don’t think you’re alone. Remember health doesn’t depend on height or weight charts. It doesn’t lay in the pages of a magazine and it doesn’t come on tv. A heathy self-image starts with YOU!!!
